Writing and the Music Inside

What if we vibrate at a certain frequency inside our bodies, and one of our jobs as writers is to get the words on the page to vibrate at the same frequency? What if writing can be about in tune or out of tune instead of good or bad? I was thinking about this as I was listening to people in one of my groups read their work. You get ten adopted people writing about what they think and feel and listen to them, and then get ten college students writing about some essay topic assigned by the professor and see if you can hear a difference.

What I’m saying is you don’t have to be a writer to be a writer.

You just have to write what is inside of you.

How do you do that?

Imagine someone you love and trust and feel safe with is sitting across the table from you. Tell them what it is you are thinking. Speak from your heart instead of from your head. What this means is to listen to yourself for a moment before speaking. What this means is to think that you are talking to connect, not to impress. What this means is you may be speaking from a place that feels slightly out of control and maybe even a little scary. This is because your heart isn’t doing what your head would do, which is to plan ahead, figure out how to manipulate. Your head is good at staying one step ahead of your words so gauge what you should say instead of what feels true. Your heart is a child. Your heart is infinity. Your heart may scare you, but it won’t betray you.

Anyway. That’s what I was thinking about.
