Day 83 - The Power of Music to Help You Jump States
My friend Janie sent me a song the other day to listen to and I was up until midnight. The song was Saltwater by Chicane and Maire Brennan. It's dance music with a whole lot of heart. Listening to it for me was like mainlining some drug (thank you chemicals in my body). I felt high and happy and like anything was possible.
It's nice to remember that we have things that can take us out of difficult thought patterns or states of being.. My go to used to be Diet Coke and peanut M&M's but now my body can't tolerate either: I go almost straight to headache and sluggishness. The right song, however, is, truly, electrifying. It's a way to plug in to what lights you up.
I'm remembering as we are on this healing retreat for adoptees how so much of the most powerful tools are the most basic. Deep breathing. Naps. Wholesome foods. Hugs. Eye contact. Feeling heard. Expressing needs.
Music brings us back to the rhythm of life we heard inside our mothers. Heart, blood, voice, the muted sounds of the world.
I bought these expensive ear plugs on-line, and when I wrote to complain that they didn't cancel out noise, the company wrote back that we don't just hear through our ears, that our bodies absorb sound, also.
I loved that image, and so even though I thought the company had created a terrible product, I let the issue drop and just put the ear plugs in the drawer.
See you tomorrow.
xoxo
